Why Garage Slabs Crack in Huntsville
The combination of expansive clay soils under North Alabama slabs, freeze-thaw temperature swings, and normal concrete shrinkage produces hairline cracks in most garages within 5–10 years of the pour.
Structural vs Cosmetic Cracks
Hairline shrinkage cracks are cosmetic and easy to seal. Wide, offset, or actively-moving cracks indicate a structural issue that needs assessment before coating.
How We Repair Before Coating
- Route out cracks in a V or U shape
- Fill with structural polyurea or epoxy mortar
- Grind flush with the slab
- Broadcast flake to visually hide the repair line
Will the Crack Come Back Through the Coating?
For hairline cracks, no. For moving structural cracks, we install a semi-rigid joint filler and expect a hairline telegraph over time. The coating still protects the slab.
