What DIY Kits Skip
Almost every DIY kit uses acid etch instead of mechanical grinding. Acid etch does not create the surface profile needed for a long-term bond, which is the single biggest reason DIY floors fail.
Material Difference
Big-box store kits are usually low-solids water-based epoxy at 3–5 mils thick. Professional systems are high-solids 100% epoxy at 15–30+ mils — often 5–10× more coating on your floor.
Where DIY Usually Fails First
- Hot-tire pickup within the first summer
- Peeling from failed acid-etch bond
- UV yellowing near the garage door
- Cracks telegraphing through thin coatings
When DIY Makes Sense
For a rental garage you don't own, or a temporary basement floor you plan to replace in 2–3 years, a DIY kit can bridge the gap. For a permanent finish, hire a professional.
