The Chemistry Behind Ambering

Standard epoxy resin contains aromatic compounds that absorb UV light and shift color over time. In a shaded interior it happens slowly; in direct sun it happens fast.

Where It Matters Most

Garages with south-facing doors, sunrooms, patios, and showroom windows — anywhere UV reaches the coating. Interior back-of-house floors rarely see meaningful ambering.

How to Prevent It

  • Use a polyaspartic or aliphatic urethane topcoat over epoxy
  • Skip epoxy topcoats on UV-exposed patios and open-air installs
  • Choose darker or metallic finishes that mask minor color shift

Can Yellowed Epoxy Be Fixed?

Yes — light abrade the surface, then apply a UV-stable topcoat. The amber layer stays but the new topcoat freezes it in place and prevents further shift.
